Inpatient Therapy at Havenwyck Hospital: What to Expect

We tailor a treatment plan that meets your needs and goals. Group therapy sessions form the foundation of your inpatient treatment at Havenwyck Hospital.

Your individual treatment plan

We develop your treatment plan with your input and input from your loved ones (if you want that). For a child’s care plan, we always involve the family in the decision-making process.

We learn about your goals and develop a plan to help you achieve them. This is your treatment, and we want to get as much buy-in from you as possible so you can heal and recover. We check in with you every day during treatment to see how you’re progressing toward your goals and adjust your treatment plan as necessary.

Group therapy

You may already meet with a therapist outside of the hospital. Those one-on-one sessions work best when you have a long-term rapport with your therapist. That type of relationship can’t happen during a short-term hospital stay.

Like many inpatient psychiatric hospitals, we offer group therapy, which can benefit people in a mental health crisis. During group therapy, you learn from others in similar situations — and they learn from you. You start to understand that you’re not alone.

How group therapy works

Our therapists create open, welcoming spaces where you can feel comfortable sharing and talking in ways you might not with friends and loved ones. We use cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, a type of talk therapy that helps you identify and change ways of thinking and behaving and provides coping skills.

Our inpatient program focuses on equipping you with practical tools and skills to navigate life’s challenges, including how to:

  • Build healthy relationships: Learn how to set boundaries, communicate clearly and say “no” when you need to.
  • Ask for help: Develop the ability to know when you need support and feel empowered to ask for it.
  • Develop communication skills: Expand your emotional vocabulary and learn how to express yourself. You can also explore ways you and others around you express and receive love and affection, along with strategies for regulating your emotions.

A typical day at Havenwyck Hospital

Your day at Havenwyck Hospital follows a schedule so you can feel comfortable and know what to expect. You have meaningful treatment and activities throughout your day, all geared toward helping you learn more about yourself and making healthy choices.

A day here includes:

  • Mealtime: Meals are held together in our cafeteria.
  • Group therapy: You attend at least four daily group therapy sessions led by experienced clinicians, including therapists, social workers and counselors.
  • Meetings: During morning and evening group meetings, we discuss goals and wrap up the day.
  • Nurse-led group: You get information about medications, health and wellness.
  • Activity therapy: This may include music, art and yoga, led by therapeutic recreation therapists.
  • Recreation time: You can relax or work out in one of our gyms or outdoor courtyards.
  • Evening activities: Enjoy activities like karaoke, bingo or a movie to help you relax.

The discharge process

We work with you to figure out the next steps once you’ve completed your inpatient program.

Many people need additional psychiatric care once they leave an inpatient program. That may mean regular individual therapy sessions in an outpatient office. Or it could mean an outpatient “step-down” psychiatric program that provides another level of support.

We support you as you get ready to leave our program. Options for after discharge include:

  • Partial hospitalization program (PHP): This program is at Branches Auburn Hills, a service of Havenwyck Hospital.
  • Intensive outpatient program (IOP): This service is also at Branches Auburn Hills.
  • Individual therapy: If you don’t have a therapist, we connect you with one and coordinate an appointment within seven days of leaving our facility.
  • Medication management appointment: We can coordinate this appointment within 30 days of discharge, either with your psychiatrist or primary care provider.
